Ulcerative colitis: grading of severity according to riley
Abstract
To grade macroscopic and microscopic rectal appearance in a trial that compared mesalazine and sulfasalazine in patients with ulcerative colitis
Severity of mucosal changes is recorded at three sites within the rectum
In the lowest 5 cm, between 5 and 10 cm and above 10 cm with reference to the anal margin
A rectal biopsy is taken from the anterior rectal wall between 5 and 10 cm
Grades 0 and 1 are considered endoscopic remission
Active disease is considered grade II-IV
