Hepatic cirrhosis: Grading of severity according to Child-Turcotte-Pugh

    • Pugh modified the Child Turcotte classification to obtain an instrument to predict outcome after portosystemic surgery
    • The grading is based on that originally described by Child
    • Prolongation of prothrombin is included and the assessment of body nutrition is omitted
    • Patients with five points have good hepatic function, while patients with 15 points have the poorest hepatic reserve
    • Allowance is made for patients with primary biliary cirrhosis as their bilirubin levels are usually out of proportion as compared to other liver function tests
