The Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score (MODS) for organ system failure

    • To develop an objective scale to measure the severity of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in critically ill patients
    • The score is calculated by adding the worst scores from each organ system during the first 24 hours of admission to the ICU
    • A high initial MODS score and a large increase in score during the ICU stay correlate well with mortality
