Gallbladder cancer: staging according to Nevin

    • To stage and grade gallbladder cancer and to provide guidelines for treatment
    • Stage I and II cancer are treated with cholecystectomy
    • Stage III and IV have a poor prognosis, but this may be improved by radical surgery
    • In stage V carcinoma surgery will not affect the poor outcome
    • If a combined score is made of the stage score plus the grading score, a score of 2-4 has a 5 year survival of 78%
    • A higher score has a 1 year survival of less than 50%
