Hepatocellular carcinoma: the Okuda classification
Abstract
To develop a simple practical staging system to elucidate the natural history and prognosis of hepatocellular cancer
The classification is applied retrospectively to 850 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma
Median survival of patients who underwent hepatic resection in stage I was 26 months and in stage II 12 months
Stage I patients are candidates for surgical therapy
Stage III are usually treated nonsurgically
Survival of syage II patients is highly variable
